While I used a Silva Ranger at work for 30 years, I prefer the lighter, smaller Silva Guide for off-trail backpacking and xc skiing. Instead of an adjustable declination, there's a declination scale. Before a trip I use a felt tip pen to mark the scale with the declination of the area I will be visiting. It speeds up taking a reading and works well for me.
